Seminar Review
On February 21 at 4:00 p.m., the fourth session of the regular open seminar series hosted by the Political Economy Team of Seoul National University’s Center for Contemporary Korean Studies was held online. Under the theme of “the evolution of technology sourcing strategies in Korea’s electronics industry and distributive politics in post-industrial Korea,” the seminar provided an opportunity to discuss the structural transformation of the Korean economy and its broader policy implications.
The seminar was organized in collaboration with Seoul National University and its research team, bringing together experts in industry and political economy for an in-depth discussion of how Korean electronics firms’ technology sourcing strategies and Korea’s distributive politics have changed over time.

The first presentation was delivered by Professor Jaeyong Song of Seoul National University, titled “Evolution of Technology Sourcing Strategies of Korean Electronics Companies: The Case of Samsung Electronics.” Professor Song analyzed the changing trajectory of Samsung Electronics’ technology sourcing strategies and discussed how Korean electronics companies have sought sustainable strategies amid global competition.
The second presentation was jointly delivered by Professor Nahee Kang of King’s College London, Professor Kahee Jo of the University of Sheffield, and Professor Hyunji Kwon of Seoul National University, under the title “Distributive Politics in the Post-Industrial Era: South Korea from a Macro-Historical Perspective.” The presenters analyzed how changes in Korea’s economic and industrial structure have shaped distributive politics, and examined Korea’s policy responses and their implications within broader macro-historical trends.

Following the presentations, a discussion session was held with faculty members from Seoul National University’s Center for Contemporary Korean Studies. The invited discussants shared diverse perspectives on the evolution of technology sourcing strategies in Korea’s electronics industry and changes in distributive politics. Key topics included technological self-reliance, changes in global supply chains, research and development investment strategies, and the role of distributive policy in a post-industrial society. Alternative policy approaches and further implications were also discussed.
The seminar was held as an open Zoom conference, allowing many participants to attend. The Q&A session also provided attendees with an opportunity to engage in meaningful discussion with the presenters and invited faculty members.
